What I have been reading - 7th October 2019

Here are some of the things that caught my eye this week:

50 shades of risk: Here's a cheer-y list of 50 risks that will put the stock market falling into perspective.

Melinda Gates: Here's why I am committing $1 billion to promote gender equality: Wow. This is amazing and inspiring. Thank you Melinda. "$1 billion is a lot of money, but I also recognise that it's only a small fraction of what's necessary."

Designing your days in retirement: I am trying to be thoughtful about how I define success as I build my business and the first half of this article really resonated with me. If you are nearing retirement the second half of this article is particularly worth a read.

Does the market care about an impeachment?: Ben Carlson tries to answer this question.

10 Attributes of Great Financial Advisors: This two minute read tells you what you should be looking for in a financial advisor. This is important stuff.

FINALLY:

Billionaire Ken Fisher draws public ire for comparing winning clients to wooing women: Ken Fisher runs an advisory business in the US with more than $100 billion in assets under management. His net worth is almost $4 billion. He thought he could say anything. But times are changing. Two days ago he had a 'fireside chat' at an advisory conference. The content was supposed to be private. One male advisor was so appalled by his comments that he broke the non-disclosure agreement and made a public video that has gone viral in the advisory world. Fisher likened winning a client's trust to "trying to get into a girls pants." He talked about genitalia, made reference to Jeffry Epstein and drug use. Following the video account by Alex Chalekian, Fisher seemed confused and said "I have given a lot of talks, a lot of times, in a lot of paces and said stuff like this and never gotten that type of response." He added "Mostly the audience understands what I am saying." When he tried to apologise he slipped in "I regret I accepted that speech invitation because it was kind of a pain in the neck." There is so much I could and want to say about this. But for now, let's put the $1 billion committed by Melinda Gates to gender equality in context with the $4 billion made by this man. And thank you to Alex Chalekian - a true hero!

ENJOY!
